When your home’s vinyl siding starts to get all gross and mucky, there are a few ways to deal with it. Many homeowners live under the impression that the only way to do this is with a pressure washer. Indeed, a pressure washer is one of the simplest solutions, but it’s not necessarily the most reasonable. Masters Roofing, your trusted vinyl siding and roof replacement contractor, looks at some other cleaning options in the absence of a pressure washer:
Vinegar Solution
Many people find using a mix of vinegar and water as not only a safer option for them and the environment, but it also does a more thorough job dissolving mildew and mold stains than any other concoction. You’ll need the following supplies for the job:
-
Large scrub brush
-
Small scrub brush (to get into small grooves)
-
White vinegar
-
Baking soda
-
Water
-
Small plastic container, like an old butter tub
-
Ladder
Take your bucket and mix a 70/30 ratio of water to vinegar. In the small plastic container, mix a paste of baking soda and water, making sure to maintain the gritty consistency. Next, get on the ladder and begin scrubbing away from top to bottom and rinse off. Make sure the ladder is placed carefully on the roof ledge or the wall so it doesn’t scratch or lead to some other form of damage that later requires roof repair.
Bleach Solution
This is one of the most popular alternatives to power washing your vinyl siding. Here’s what you’ll need:
-
1/3 cup powdered laundry detergent
-
2/3 powdered household cleaner
-
1 quart liquid laundry bleach
-
water
Mix them together in a bucket and apply to your siding. Let it stand for five to ten minutes, give the area a scrub and rinse thoroughly. This process takes a bit longer than a pressure washer but it gives you much more thorough clean.
