The harsh winter season is over and so are the rains of spring, which means it’s easier to assess if your roof is still in good shape. There are plenty of things that could have happened to your roof during the cold months so you have to be more thorough when inspecting it for damage. This is why we recommend making a summer roofing checklist to see if your home is due for a roof repair.
Sort Items According to Location
Some roofing problems are easier to spot from outside the home while others are more visible from inside. Make a separate checklist for items that you can check from either side of the roof. You can further separate items that can be checked from ground level and those that can only be seen if you’re on the roof.
Prioritize Problem Areas
Some parts of your roof are more prone to having problems than others. Good examples would be the flashing running along valleys or areas near the gutters since those areas tend to get the most water runoff. From inside, check the areas closest to the vents to see if there are any signs of condensation from indoors. Membrane roofing has a different set of problem spots (with fixes usually similar to those done in commercial roofing services) so you might want to research a bit about your roof’s particular vulnerabilities.
Include Other Home Components
Sometimes, problems come from other home components other than the roof. For example, a clogged gutter can cause water buildup that can damage the fascia and other adjacent parts of the roof. Faulty insulation can cause water droplets to form underneath the roof sheathing, which isn’t protected by the underlayment and the shingles. Make sure you include those components on your checklist.
Ask the Pros for Help
Some roofing problems are difficult to spot, let alone access. Since trying to get to a tough spot in a residential roofing system just for a quick check is dangerous for both you and the roof, it’s much better to leave more thorough inspections to a reputable roofer like us. We have the skills and the equipment to spot even the slightest signs of trouble.
